After years of making English Toffee for family and friends at Christmas, Kay Cutter and Jean Bakewell have seized the “opportunity” offered by a “difficult” economy to create a new business.
Recession Candy - "established out of necessity" says it all. Their goal, aside from keeping their heads above water, is to produce delicious, all natural English Toffee that will be affordable for all to enjoy.
Their artistic talents are not wasted. In addition to economical bags of toffee, they have created decorative boxes featuring recycled glass and prints for many of their own paintings. Something special for those wanting a truly unique and delicious gift. A line of Giclee prints, mousepads, coasters, note cards of their art work can be found at their store on Etsy, Ashland Artists.
The artists have lived in Ashland over 15 years, and their works can be seen in many establishments, at the Shakespeare festival and their craft booths at various markets in and around Ashland. Many of their paintings and graphic designs have been done under Studio Designs.
Jean Bakewell: Originally from New Brighton, England, Jean began her career etching on slate from the rooftops. For many years, she dabbled in different forms of art. She finally settled on painting unique, colorful and humorous pictures of cats, dogs, and people.
Kay Cutter: Once a 'Sunday" painter herself, Kay now feels more like a graphic artist. She has the joy of manipulating and reproducing Jean's images. Together, they are a pretty formidable team.
